AICAR is an AMPK activator and a nucleoside analogue rather than a peptide. Once inside the cell it is phosphorylated to a compound that mimics AMP, which activates AMP-activated protein kinase without the cell actually being energy-depleted.

That mimicry is the whole research value: it lets a metabolic stress response be studied in isolation from the stress that normally triggers it. Because the mechanism is intracellular, it is cell-permeable in a way most compounds in this catalogue are not.
